OPENING OF NEW MARK TAPER FORUM

The larger-than-life Dame Edna, “possibly the most entertaining person alive” hosted a celebration for the opening of the new Mark Taper Forum, on the Music Center Plaza, in downtown Los Angeles, following the Taper’s $30 million state-of-the art interior renovation. The Taper is one of the three stages on which the Center Theatre Group produces award winning theatre year round, under the leadership of Artistic Director, Michael Ritchie.
The gala began with a special red-carpet experience as Dame Edna covered arrivals to her own party, followed by cocktails, dinner and a special sneak preview of John Guare’s classic, “The House of Blue Leaves.”
Dame Edna Everage, along with Olivia Newton-John, Rupert Murdoch and Nicole Kidman, is one the most prominent of stars to emerge from Australia. Her biting humor and gregarious personality served her well in greeting such stars as William Macy and Felicity Huffman (Desperate Housewives), Brooke Adams and Tony Shalhoub (Monk), and Virginia Madsen. Edna certainly was the best- dressed Dame in the house!
Some of the notables feasting on tuna tartare with passion fruit ponzu, and beef short rib skewers, included CTG Board President, Martin Massman, philanthropist Brindell Roberts, (who donated $5 million to the renovations,) Taper’s Founding Director, Gordon and Judi Davidson,  Kirk and Anne Douglas (who have their own theatre in Culver City), and Richard Kagan  (CTG Chairman) with his actress wife, Julie Hagerty.
Tickets to this gala were a hefty  $1,500 per person, but were well worth it.  They raised over $1 million to support the Center Theatre Group, one of the top and most active theatre companies in the nation.

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rosi, Hosts of the Fundraiser

Yes on Prop 2 – Stop Animal Cruelty

Undeniable animal lover Ellen DeGeneres hosted a fundraiser in Bel Air to support Prop 2 to stop Animal Cruelty.  The star-studded evening brought out such celebs as Spiderman, Tobey Maguire,  Jennifer Coolidge (who was so fantastic in Best in Show),   Olivia Wilde, to name a few.  The silent auction raised a total of $1.2 million, and featured a concert with two fabulous performers Carole King and Moby. Some of the other animal friendly guests in attendance included James Cromwell, who we all remember from his starring role in Babe, and Jennifer Coolidge, who was so amusing in Best in Show
Prop 2 ends the practice of cramming farm animals in cages so small that the animals cannot even turn around or extend their limbs.  The measure was endorsed by the Humane Society of the United States, Farm Sanctury Farm workers and thousands of vets, farmers and animal protection advocates.  The best news is that the Prop passed with 63% of the votes in favor.  Who says that celebs are not powerful in the voting process?

THE LILI CLAIRE FOUNDATION

Matthew Perry (our favorite Friend) hosted the Lili Claire Foundation’s 11t Annual Benefit Dinner and Concert Gala, which included a silent auction and concert, with amazing performers such as  Joely Fisher (Til Death) singing, “Dream a Little Dream”.  The surprise guest was the non other than Frontman of Bush, Gavin Rossdale! He was with his glamorous wife, Gwen Stefani, who looked fabulous despite birthing her latest son, Zuma Nesta Rock Rossdale, a few weeks ago.
The Lili Claire Foundation focuses on children with neurogentic conditions like Down syndrome and autism, and provides support services for them and their families.

Others in attendance included former 90210 star, Jennie Garth (another alumni from Dancing with the Stars), and Terri Nun of Berlin.  Also looking very soigné was diminutive David Spade, who certainly has had his share of lovely ladies.  The mini Casanova states his secret is to be “consistent and reliable.”  Guess it worked with such lovelies as Gena Lee Nolin, Jennifer Aniston (another former Friend) and Heather Locklear.
